 Course Description:

This course provides instruction in the skills needed for the proper collection of blood and other  specimens used for diagnostic testing.  Emphasis is on ethics, legalities, medical terminology, safety and universal precautions, health care delivery systems, patient relations, anatomy and physiology, and specimen collection.  Upon completion, student should be able to demonstrate competence in the theoretical comprehension of phlebotomy techniques.  This is a certificate-level course.  Course Hours Per Week:  Class, 20 (include 4hr Seminar) Hours Credit: 228

 Course Goals:

  1. To provide you with a basic knowledge of phlebotomy and the health care environment.
  2. To provide you with basic venipuncture and skin puncture skills.

  3. To help you develop a professional attitude in your work as a phlebotomist.

Standard of Progress

Qualitative Standard

Classroom Phase 200 Hours of lecture

A.                 A student shall be placed on academic probation if at any time they fail to maintain the grade point average for the class which is a 2.5 GPA.  A student who is placed on probation shall have the three successive modules during which to raise the cumulative grade point average to or above the minimum level.  If the required grade level has not been reached during this probation period, that student shall be terminated from training for reasons of unsatisfactory progress.  This will be considered academic suspension and will result in an “F”.

In any event, a student must have earned at least 2.5 grade average which ever applies at the completion of the classroom phase of training before entering the clinical phase of training.

B.                 A student must complete, with a passing grade, all the modules required.  If not, they will be required to repeat and complete, with an acceptable passing grade, previously failed modules within that course of study.  One chance will be given to bring the grade up at no additional cost to the student.  A student may not repeat more than three (3) previously failed, incomplete or withdrawn modules.

Clinical Phase 100 Venipunctures

A.                  Any clinical student who is unable to demonstrate competence in the clinical phase of training shall be required to repeat any portion of the classroom phase needed to reinforce those areas of weakness.  HTI will allow the student to wait until the next clinical session in order to complete their training at no additional charges.  Otherwise, the student must pay an instructor $30.00 per hour of private tutoring whenever the instructor is available.  A grade point average of 2.5 or “C” is required to pass the clinical phase of training.

When a student enters academic probation during the classroom or clinical phase of training, they shall not be allowed to earn more than one incomplete.  Any student earning more than one during the probationary period will be terminated for reasons of unsatisfactory progress.

B.               A student that skips more than two clinical days will be required to make them up.  The student make-up schedule will be arranged at the convenience of the instructor.  The student must pay $30.00 per hour that the instructor has to tutor the student.  During the next schedule clinical session, one make-up day will be given at no additional fee.  Excused absences will be given for documented emergencies, such as death of immediate family member, or critical illness.  In this case, appropriate documentation should be provided to the instructor.
